Common symptoms of rosacea include: reddening of the cheeks,
a burning sensation on or near the nose, swelling (inflammation), small visible blood vessels on the
face, watery or irritated eyes, bumps or pimples on the face or chest.
The most common causes of rosacea flare-ups include: heat,
cold, alcohol, spicy foods, exercise, stress, worry, anxiety, sun exposure, low humidity, and wind.
With care and consideration of the issues that may be
causing flare-ups, your life can return to normal. If you are experiencing frequent flare-ups, look into
possible causes and consider adjusting how you deal with these areas.
Sun ... Always have a sensitive skin SPF lotion
near you to apply to your face if you are going to be outside for an extended period of time. Keep the
lotion in your car, purse, brief-case - anywhere it will be available at all times. Find a non-greasy
product that is not easily detectable.
Alcohol ... Red wines are most likely to cause
flare-ups, while white wines generally have less of an effect. Each person has a different tolerance
level, so see what works for you. There are many more options than wine, so why not try something new?
Exercise ... When you exercise, cooling down with
chipped ice can help. This might work at home, but is not always possible in a health club. If your health
club has fans or a cooling system, try to exercise near these or walk over to them during or after your
routine. Take a small towel and try to keep it moistened with cold water to refresh your face and neck.
Bring a container of cool water to sip.
Stress, worry or anxiety ... can cause flare-ups.
Look into what might be causing these problems. Discussing them with upbeat friends, relatives, or a
professional counselor may relieve some of your concerns. Exercise that does not cause a rosacea flare-up
is another option to consider in these situations.
Food ... Spicy foods can cause flare-ups. Look
for other types of food to test what works for you. There are many non-spicy sauces and other condiments
to try and experience. Ask for ideas from friends and relatives.
Weather ... wind, heat, low humidity, and cold
are all factors that can cause rosacea flare-ups. All of these factors should be taken into account if
you are experiencing flare-ups. Avoid these if possible, or wear appropriate clothing.
